Shape Search

Learners photograph shapes they find outside using an iPad. The project builds independence in signing into, holding, and photographing with an iPad. It also emphasizes consent—whether to take a photo—and proper iPad use. Learners work in small groups of 5 to 7 over 3 to 5 outings.

iPads: How to log in.

Basic Shapes: Knowing the basic shapes like triangle, circle, rectangle, and square.

Project Outline
Duration: 75 minutes

Phase 1

In groups of 5-6 learners, facilitate a conversation about the parts of an iPad. (Screen, Camera, Case, Microphone). The goals is for students to feel comfortable identifying the parts of the iPad and hold the iPad without obstructing the various parts.
Facilitate a short “logging in gym” where students unfold their case to stand it in “triangle mode”. Find their name in the list of classes and student names. Sign in with their code. Close the cover. Open back to Triangle Mode. Log in again. Repeat until everyone can do all the steps.
Small groups go outside to identify shapes in their environment. In the school courtyard, students take pictures of shapes in their environment. Windows, fences, swings, manhole covers, bricks, stumps, flowers. Students collect as many as they can over 6-8 minutes.
Collect the images from students as they come in to create a slideshow for the class to review later in the day or during another class.
